When a consumer lands on your website, you’ve got about 50 milliseconds to make a good first impression. People connect with images instantly and emotionally, so many websites today have one thing in common—a big, beautiful hero image that takes up a lot of real estate (pun intended).
What’s a hero image?
Simply put, it’s a stunning, meaningful image that speaks to you and the value you offer. Carefully chosen, the hero image helps you immediately strike a connection so consumers feel compelled to read on and discover you and the value you offer.
No doubt you’ve seen them before. Here are a couple of examples:
Between the foam and the condensation on the glass, I can almost taste it.
Ditto on the Molly & Me—these would go quite well with my pint.
Why use one?
Well, for starters, a picture is worth a thousand words, so why not let it help tell your story?
Research from the Conversion XL institute shows that consumers like websites that make sense. If you have an attractive image front and center that’s relevant to your value proposition, does it get better than that?
To help illustrate the sheer power of the hero image, I bring you the CatScarf.
I’m an animal lover, so naturally I connected immediately with this picture of a slumbering feline. So much so, in fact, that it inspired me to read on and learn a bit about the CatScarf.
In just a few clicks I learned that there’s an entire collection devoted to the CatScarf, they are specially crafted to stay in place on even the most wild of cats, and a portion of every scarf sold goes to help animals in need (I that part).
Now while I don’t foresee myself purchasing “The Felix” for $99 to help my cat feel stylish and comfortable, the point is that the hero image did its job. It drew me in enough to learn all about their value proposition, get interested in their business, and become a prospect.

Okay, I have the perfect image. How do I upload it?
It’s as easy as 1-2-3.

2. Select the theme on the left that displays the color you want (for example, Capecod displays a red banner, while Capital displays blue). Then click Change image to upload your own image.
3. When done, click Preview to see how lovely it looks > then click OK to save it and you’re done!
Add social media links so they can get to know you better
You’ve drawn them in with your stunning hero image; help them get to know you a little better with links to all of your social media accounts.
All you have to do is enter them in your profile (click My Account from the top menu > then enter the URLs in the fields below):
Once you’ve done that, the footer on each and every page will display your social media accounts and a link to your profile on realtor.com.
That’s all for now folks. Here’s to your picture-perfect website. Enjoy!
